Mark is not tied to your LMS or video platform. It creates a lightweight record of prompt responses and timing around the session for instructors to interpret in context.

From passive viewing to a reviewable engagement record

A recorded lecture alone does not establish Regular and Substantive Interaction. Under federal distance-education rules, RSI is evaluated across a course or competency and depends on meaningful instructor involvement, predictable opportunities for interaction, monitoring of student engagement, and proactive follow-up when needed.

Mark lets instructors create or import a timed sequence of prompts to use alongside a recording. Students submit short matching responses as those prompts are presented. After a student's first accepted response, sequence and pacing rules limit how quickly the student can move through the remaining prompt timeline.

This gives each use of an existing recording its own student-specific response and timing record without requiring the instructor to edit or re-record the video. Mark provides participation patterns that instructors can review and use to inform follow-up.

What Mark does not do: Mark does not monitor video playback or prove continuous attention.

Used with instructor review and follow-up as part of an institution-designed course process, Mark's session records can support engagement monitoring and RSI documentation. Mark does not award credit or determine whether RSI or any other regulatory requirement has been satisfied.

FAQ

Do students need to install anything?
No. Students only need a browser and internet access.
What does a student see during an engagement session?
Students open the active Mark session in a browser and enter short matching responses as prompts are presented during the class session or recording. Mark does not reveal the instructor's prompt list in the participant view. Students move forward through the sequence and may continue with a later prompt after missing one. Mark records the activity for instructor review but does not automatically decide whether a student was engaged or whether a requirement was satisfied.
What if a student misses a prompt or has a technical problem?
Mark does not turn a missed response into an automatic conclusion. The instructor reviews the available session record in context and can consider connectivity, device, access, sign-in, attendance, or accommodation circumstances.
Can I use an existing video without editing it?
Yes. Import a list of instructor-created prompts and their video offsets into a staged session, then reopen the session when it is ready for students. Mark preserves the timing between prompts and applies its sequence and pacing rules after a student's first accepted response. Mark does not edit, host, or access the video, and it does not monitor the video player's playback position.
Does Mark host my videos?
No. Mark does not host videos and does not need access to your video files or video platform. It stays separate from your recording and hosting workflow.
Does Mark integrate with my LMS?
Mark is not an LMS integration. It can be used alongside your LMS, and instructors can post Mark links wherever they already share course materials.
How do students and instructors sign in?
Microsoft is not required for a Mark pilot. Mark supports Microsoft organizational sign-in for eligible users and can provide local password accounts when Microsoft sign-in is unavailable. Local accounts are protected by an authenticator-app verification code.
What does a demo involve?
We agree on a time and set aside about 30 minutes. The goal is to understand your class or recording workflow, show how engagement prompts and records work, and decide whether Mark fits the problem you are trying to solve.
How long does routine pilot setup take?
After instructors and students can sign in, routine setup can usually be completed in minutes. Creating a workspace, adding a session, and joining a workspace each typically take less than a minute. Institutional sign-in or domain approval may require separate coordination with an identity or IT contact.
What data is collected?
For engagement verification, Mark needs enough information to connect instructors, Mark workspaces, sessions, students, engagement prompts, responses, timestamps, and engagement records. Mark does not collect or host your video content. See the privacy policy for more detail.
Can departments use Mark?
Yes. Mark is a good fit for low-overhead department or program pilots. Instructors create and manage their own Mark workspaces, students can join available workspaces, and exports are available by workspace. Department or institution-level rollup needs can be discussed during pilot planning.
How much central administration is required?
Mark is designed to keep pilots lightweight. Instructors add their own Mark workspaces, students can join available workspaces, users can be added in bulk when needed, and eligible Microsoft users can be provisioned when they first sign in.
Is this foolproof against cheating?
No tool is foolproof. The goal is a fair, reliable engagement signal instructors can interpret without turning the course into a compliance exercise.
What does "privacy-respecting" mean?
